The Amsterdam sugar industry has a long and rich history. In 1605 Amsterdam already had three sugar refineries. As from the second half of the 19th century beet sugar became more common and famous companies like “De Bruine & ZN, De Granaatappel, De Drie Suykerbroden and Petrovitch” where all located in the centre of Amsterdam. These day’s most former great Amsterdam confectionery companies have closed down or moved their facility. Some of the former production locations are now well known for their tribute to the famous Amsterdam nightlife like “De Melkweg” and “The Sugarfactory”. After many years of operating more or less under the radar one of the former great sugar companies has launched a new Amsterdam based confectionery brand. Sugar Rebel will connect the rich history of Amsterdam sugar industry with 21st century design and trends.
